UI Progress

Tonight's session was focused on learning all I could about the new Enhanced Input System in Unreal.

Sample UI featuring Player health, mana, action bar and cast bar

I was used to the original axis and action mapping system in Unreal Engine 4.2 so it took me about an hour to grasp the concepts and approach of the new Input Actions and Input Mapping Contexts.

I then turned my attention toward the boring and plain default mouse cursor in the game. I wanted something that felt more in line with a fantasy MMO style and this is where I landed:

I focused the remainder of the night on getting the enemy AI name plates and health bar to display properly and read the values from the attributes data table. While not as easy as I would have liked it to be, I learned a lot about how the widgets interact and how to pass the variables to the right blueprints as they update.

Here's a sample of my "Hello World" scene where I am prototyping the interface and working on these interactions.

Shoutout to HONETi and his 4K Full Fantasy GUI / UI asset pack available on the Unreal Marketplace. His work is incredibly high quality and setup properly. I will be using this pack as the basis for the "Classic" user interface in Pandemonium.

Oh, and the version control setup from last night was a success! The game is now stored in a Perforce depot, safe and sound.

Tonight was very productive and I am energized by the progress so far. Developing games in my "free time" after work is quite difficult, but extremely rewarding when things start to come together. I will continue to focus on making incremental progress every day towards the game. I am looking forward to tomorrow night's session already!

I leave you with another concept based on yesterday's post, this time with a bit more color and variation added and some geode concepts for a cave crawl dungeon.

Cheers,

Vinny
